Anyah Dembling of Freedom Information Systems Inc. earned the Space Flight Awareness (SFA) Honoree Award for performing exemplary work in support of pioneering technologies and capabilities sponsored by the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) at NASA headquarters, and was also nominated for her contributions to the work of the American space program, specifically for communicating the value of technology investments for NASA’s current and future missions.
The SFA Honoree Award is an important recognition of NASA and industry employees and is presented to employees dedicated to quality work and flight safety.
Anyah began her career in the Office of the Chief Technologist, moving to STMD with the establishment of the new office in 2013. Through the transition, she provided both offices with communications support while each found its footing. During her time at the agency, she has developed an understanding of the importance of technology and innovation, striving daily to help NASA innovators represent their projects and concepts in a way that stakeholders and members of the public can understand.
Anyah has drafted speeches, talking points, video scripts, presentations, web features and publications in support of STMD programs and initiatives. She has helped to plan Hill, University, and community outreach events to advance the Space Tech mission. She launched the Directorate’s first electronic magazine, Technology Innovation, telling the stories of agency-wide technology developments in visual and dynamic ways. Its first edition garnered over 40,000 readers.
Last November, Anyah was tasked with undertaking management of STMD’s social media presence. In the subsequent months, serving as a coordinator for the Office of Communications’ Technology campaign, she took responsibility of the strategic planning and implementation of the Campaign voice on social media channels, directly broadcasting the milestones and test flights achieved by NASA.
Anyah coordinated activities between all campaign representatives, including the nine STMD programs, other NASA MDs and offices, and corporate and academic partners. She also utilized innovative methods to spread campaign messages – intertwining popular culture, movie releases, sports tournaments, and historical events with NASA achievements to affirm the value of technology and innovation in new ways with new appeal.
During the height of the campaign, social media messages containing the official hash tag had been read by as many as 100 million users. Her leadership of the public-facing element of the campaign was a success, helping to promote the vast technology developments across the agency. Additionally, in support of other Campaigns and communication goals, Anyah has stimulated synergy internally by highlighting the partnerships behind technology projects aboard the International Space Station, payloads on commercial spacecraft, and with industry partners.
